Is it OK for Me to Use the Word Y’all?

I’m watching the Apprentice tonight on NBC. Clint the 40 year old Finalist from Texas is using Y’all a whole lot. It makes me smile. I am often made fun of for my use of it. Whether it be up North or out West, I am on the receiving end of a fair share of giggles because of it.

I get it.It isn’t Proper Standard English.

So is it OK?

On a related note, I was at the The Hartsfield Jackson (gotta get that Jackson in there) Atlanta airport earlier this month and had a chance to grab some food before an early morning flight. The airport had a Moes (Welcome to Moes!)  and they had a breakfast menu. The nice young lady asked if we wanted the breakfast or the ‘leRnch’ burrito.

I’ve never heard the ‘R’ sound in the word Lunch. Totally threw me.

  1. Haha, I’m the farthest thing from a Southerner [Canadian, heyyo!] and even I find myself saying y’all with an abnormal frequency for a Canadian [much, much less than I say ‘eh’, but still more frequently than is suitable for a Canadian.]

That said, you are much much more geographically justified to use y’all ;-).
