Jacob/Israel has died. Joseph has died. A new king of Egypt has come to power who did not know Joseph or what he did for them. He was afraid of the Israelites. He thought that they would rise up and overthrow the Egyptians. He decided that all male children born of the Israelites should die when they are born.
This is how Moses came to be put in his basket and laid in the river.
The Israelites were under extreme hardship under the King of Egypt. They built many things for him. The taskmasters made the Israelites lives extremely difficult. Moses ended up killing one of the taskmasters and ran for his life to Midian, where he married and had a son.
But the Israelites were still slaves.
24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.25 And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God had respect unto them.
Moses then meets God in the burning bush. He tells Moses who He is… and who Moses is. God wants to use Moses to go before the Pharaoh and free His people. When Moses is asked who sent him, his answer is to be… I AM sent me. We are told that great wonders will be performed through Moses.
The big takeaways are that God is watching us. Both as a people and as a person. While he wants to answer the prayers of a large people group, He wants us (like he wanted Moses) to have personal worship and communion with Him.
