One of the stages that you reach when you start a new website, especially one that is a blog that gives readers the ability to comment, is that moment when you get comment spam. Honestly, I would love to say that the first comment on the blog came from an actual human being, but alas, that is not true. Anyone who is an actual human reading this post… you missed your opportunity.
Yep. Today alone. I had 5 spam comments. Those spam bots that crawl the site looking for a place to drop meaningless gobblygook yet provide back link love to their own websites are relentless and smart. Why would you spend time deleting them instead of spending that same time creating content?
Akismet filters out your comment
and track-back spam for you, so you
can focus on more important things.
There are plenty of posts on the web that talk about how to and why to use Akismet, but here is how simple it is.
1) Activate Akismet in your WordPress Plugins (it is installed by default with fresh installs of WordPress)
After you activate the plugin, it will ask for an API Key. You can get one at www.akismet.com
As long as you are using it for personal use, you can actually sign up for free. You can, if you want to, donate a few bucks for this awesome plugin and the service it offers, but you don’t have to. All you have to do is fill out a few fields, provide an email address and they will email you the API Key that you need to complete set up on your site.
Once complete, there is nothing more you need to do. Sure, there will be some comment spam that sneaks through, but Akismet will immediately take care of the majority of comment spam.
